Occasionally, webmasters receive bounce-back emails that they did not send. There are three ways that email can be sent from your address:
- Virus: You may have a virus on your computer that is sending email on your behalf. Please make sure that you have virus software installed, and that it is up-to-date. New viruses are written all the time, so you must update your virus software weekly or more often.
- Password: If you have given out your password, or have a password that is easily guessable, someone may be logging into your account to send emails. You should change your password, and make sure that it is something that is not easily guessable.
- Spoofing: Spoofing email addresses is quite simple. It is similar to someone sending a regular postal letter, and writing your return address in the upper left-hand corner. This is the most likely cause of your problem, and unfortunately, is very difficult or impossible to combat. The only way to stop such action is to locate the person who is spoofing your email address and bring legal action against them.
It is very common for website owners to have this problem, and there is little that can be done stop the emails from being sent. However, spam filtering can be used to ensure that you do not see the email in your box. You are welcome to use your own filtering, or we can provide our Spam Shark services for $15.95/year. Please
let us know if you would like this to be added to your account.
