Choosing your Domain Name

Tuesday, May 11, 2010, 9:39 AM [General]

Short, one-word domain names are scarce, commonly fetching 4 and 5 figure payments for their purchase. Without this kind of funding to start with, you will most likley be choosing longer two and three word long domain names. One trap to avoid is choosing a domain name that is too long. Search engines do lend weight to websites whose key words are also listed in the domain name, however, lengthy names can deter people from wanting to visit the site and may deter them from remembering the domain name itself.

Your domain name should be memorable and something you can say out loud without getting tongue-tied. Try rehearsing the domain name out loud as if informing someone of the site. If you find yourself stumbling too much, it probably isn't a good choice. For instance a dash can help in finding the domain name of your dreams, but too many dashes can interrupt the flow of speaking and might hinder its memorability.

Be creative. Try adding a related number or word to the beginning or end of the domain name. I may have wanted customkitchens.com or custom-kitchens.com, but that was taken long ago, so I might try customkitchens101.com, 1000customkitchens.com, or yourcustomkitchens.com.

Also, try different top-level domains besides ".com". Not all country- code top-level domains require you to be located or doing business in their country so you can sometimes grab some very creative names. I highly doubt "Insure.me" is doing much business in the country of Montenegro.

To check availability of your domain name ideas, use the domain name search tool at the top of our webpage, webhero.com. If the domain is not available, our tool does generate a few suggestions including the popular ".com" top-level domain alternatives such as .net, .us, or .me.
