Google Adwords is something you have to spend money on if you are going to build a successful online business.  We spend approximately $30,000 per month at ONEsite.  The intersting thing is that when we first launched ONEsite, we spent about $3000 per month with much better results.  When an area gets hot like social networking software, clicks become fraudulent in very high numbers.  I would estimate that approximately 70% of my Google adsense traffic is fraudulent.  Google gives you no reports to verify traffic, no substantiation, only a charge to your credit card.  In fact, the clicks they charge you for don't even match their own traffic tracking service with Urchin.

At some point they have to become accountable.  Right now they get by only because it is the only way to make your business visible online.

Yes Bob, I agree. I too had some less than cost-effective results with AdWords.

That said, as someone who is new to ONEsite I have found the experience thus far less than ideal. Of course maybe it's just me - wouldn't be the first time that's for sure ;). But I have to say I feel like I've been working pretty hard for a little bit of information. I think it's great that ya all are kickin' butt with the likes of Clear Channel as a client but most of us are trying to elevate clients who have yet to scale their idea/vision/dreams to that level. I digress.

For example,  the Product page has a nice table that lists the various ONEsite features but then there are no definitions, no "tool tip" more info boxes, etc. Let's face it, the soc-net space is a work in progress so not every platform provider is one the same page when it comes to features and/or sub-feature within those main feature. Come on Bob, you've been at this internet thing for some time so I'm guessing you'd agree that clarity and transparency are pretty important when it comes to keeping a site visitor engaged. Create too much doubt and the customer will just move on to another site.

From what I can tell you have a fairly good product/service/platform but it's taken me A LOT of work to get to that point and it's still not clear enough to me to be able to make a recommendation to a client.

Btw, the ONEsite documentation can use some work as well. Put it on a wiki and let it become a work in progress. Let those of us who are figuring it out one click at a time be able to share that knowledge with others. I think my questions are good and sound but at the same time unlikely they are anything new.

Bottom line, I do agree there might be quite a bit of fluff in your AdWords bill but at the same time I believe there's still room for improvement in your site. Google is getting the people there so maybe the problem might be what's there once they do? Again, I could certainly be wrong. That said,  I also believe that if a biz makes their customers happy they tell two friends (or clients) and so on... And so on... AdWords isn't the only way. In fact, IMHO coming from a guy who's bread & butter is a social networking I almost find that comment disturbing.

No hard feelings. I hope to hear from you. Please do not be offened, I'm just trying to be helpful but admit that there may be some frustration in my tone here. Pardon me if I have managed to offend. This is not my attention.

Bob,

I think you're right.  I haven't tried using Google's Adwords yet.  I occassionaly have tried Yahoo's equivalent (thinking that Yahoo isn't as big so click fraud won't be as high?).  Yahoo doesn't have very good customer contact though - I think they're a Monday to Friday operation from my experience (which is silly in internet land).  I rely on organic search results - but this takes up huge time and it was quite a while before I made any money on my site.
